Starsoftheclock Saturday 11th November 2023 Selections and Review

Yesterday’s Review

0.5pt e/way Fircombe Hall (103) – An excellent effort from the selection who just found a revitalised Araifjan (105) too strong. There should be a liitle race in him soon from his lowly mark. Result 2nd 12/1 adv…11/1 SP.

1pt e/way Haworth Star (102) – An unlucky run from the selection failing by a short head, after finding himself short of room over a furlong out. His head carriage is a worry going forward, and connections may consider the application of head gear. Result 2nd 6/1, 11/2 adv…4/1 SP.

1pt e/way Vadiana (103) – Quite a gamble on the selection from 10/1 into 11/4 favourite. An error from connections in racing so prominently with the fiily on this occasion, I felt. Her two best career efforts, on the clock, have come at this track from off the pace. She was pushed forward from her draw in stall (10), and ended up four wide, with no cover and using up too much energy early on. An effort to put a line through.

1pt e/way Leabaland (103) – An excellent ride from jockey Seamie Heffernan to come across most of the field, from the widest draw, and find a position just behind the eventual winner Chummie (105). The winning time was around 2 lengths per mile faster than standard at the weights. It looked like quite a few outsiders produced career bests on the clock with  a 40/1 winner, 33/1 and 12/1 placed. Unfortunately, the selection has his own ideas about the game, and missed out on the places by 1/2 length.

Today’s Advice

Letmelivemylife (6f Hcap) – This Barry Brennan trained 5yo has been priced up as the outsider of the field for tonight’s (7.30) Chelmsford on his stable debut. A quick look at the horse’s profile shows that he is (0-8) at this distance, and his five career wins have come over 7f. When I queried the database for the trainer’s record with horses coming back from a 119 day break or longer, the results showed a record of (0-35) since June 2009. Enough to put most inquisitive punters off! However, when I went through the individual performances of those 35 horses, there were some positives to be had. Most of the performers were not rated (83) by the handicapper, as the selection is. Only four were:

15th June 2010 Bould Mover (107) 248 days off – 5th of 12 in the Gp1 King’s Stand Stakes (beaten 2 3/4 lengths) 66/1.

7th August 2010 Capone (88) 222 days off – 11th of 16 (beaten 12 1/4 lengths) 40/1.

7th January 2016 Unforgiving Minute (102) 152 days off – 8th of 8 (beaten 13 1/2 lengths) 20/1.

15th February 2019 Wapping (85) 393 days off – 4th of 6 (beaten 1 1/4 lengths)(not clear run) 40/1.

Two decent performances from four, by my reckoning. The selection’s efforts on the clock have shown himself to be ahead of his handicap mark. A (110) speed figure when carryng 9st 10lbs at Wolverhampton in March while winning easily by 3 lengths over the extended 7f, when trained by Sean Curran, was a career best at the time. On that occasion he led over a furlong out, and showed plenty of pace. His record at tonight’s venue reads 1365113. His career best speed figure of (114) behind Priscilla’s Wish in April, when only beaten 1 1/4 lengths, was achieved when going for an all-weather four-timer as the 13/8 favourite. Six winning and ten placed performances have come from that race since. As a hold-up performer, a decent pace will be needed with tonight’s drop back in distance to 6f. There are a few of tonight’s line-up who have led or made all in the past including The Waiting Game, Cuban Breeze, Hello Me and Leap Abroad. All of these positives are of course meaningless unless the horse is close to his ideal racing weight, and connections are keen to take tonight’s prize. At the prices on offer, I am willing to have a small interest, and regardless of tonight’s result, he could be an interesting purchase for connections this all-weather season.
