Today’s Advice
Tokyo Tower (9f 98Y Cns) – A replay of the key race involving four of the participants in today’s (2.05) Meydan would lead most viewers to one conclusion. Tokyo Tower looked the best of the four finishers on the day over the extended seven furlongs. There is the possibility on breeding that this extra distance may not be required, and that the horse needed to be dropped out so far that he will find it difficult to repeat his last effort. For these reasons a smaller stake will be used.
Erzindjan (9f 207Y Group 3) – Godolphin provide plenty of the participants towards the head of the markets at these meetings, making it more difficult to hit the frame for value seekers than others. Most of the time we are relying on the kindness of the extra place markets to allow us an opportunity to collect on a double figure price. This selection fits into that category in today’s (4.25) Meydan for trainer Ahmad bin Harmash who has bumped into Measured Time the last twice. Unfortunately for the selection he has to deal with New World today, another such rival. Although the formbook says he only finished sixth last time out, a replay of the race will show that he was quite unlucky in his run up the home straight. He simply had no room to operate in at a vital time, and had to switch outside under jockey Conor Beasley before finishing well. We will be hoping for a clearer passage today, and although this account will advise for three places, I would encourage punters to seek out the extra place markets to offset the many Godolphin participants in the race.
Blackstone Cliff (10f 150Y Hcap) – The selection was advised by this column last time out over C&D, and I felt he was given a poor ride by the pilot who never appeared to allow him a breather from the front that day. Three pound claiming jockey Danny Sheehy takes the ride in tonight’s (7.00) Dundalk, and connections will be hoping for a more energy saving ride. There is no doubt the selection is racing off a winnable handicap mark having done us a turn, the previous Christmas to last, at odds of 45/1 before being backed into 20/1 from a pound higher. There looks to be pace in the race with recent winner Moondharrig likely to go forward, so we will be hoping Danny can get him to relax during the race before coming with a decent effort up the home straight.
Power Drive (10f 150Y Hcap) – The handicapper hasn’t been very kind to this Paul Flynn trained gelding leaving him unchanged following recent defeats by ten and a half, and seven and a half lengths. His last effort was over a distance which he traditionally finds too far, so it is encouraging to see him back over his favourite distance tonight. He has been placed off 67 in the past, and is now seven pounds below his last winning mark. Everything looks in place now, following three pipe-openers this season, for him to employ his traditional front running role under regular pilot seven pound claimer Ciara Flynn. On this occasion we will be hoping that he can hold on when the challengers start to come out of the pack. His two most recent efforts give great encouragement on the clock for that to happen.
