Blackcurrent (6f Hcap) – This front running eight-year-old gelding has been performing well lately over tonight’s C&D. Although he is two pounds above his last winning mark, jockey Tommie Jakes takes a valuable seven pounds off for tonight’s (7.30) Newcastle. Tommie has been very successful this year winning on 7 out of his 28 rides (25% strike rate). While he may look held by current favourite Fantasy Navigator on his most recent effort, it should be noted that he was trying to make all the running into a strong headwind that night. The first three home were all head up out the back while getting plenty of cover from the strong wind. With a lighter southerly wind forecast for tonight’s contest, conditions should be more helpful for front running. My only concern is that he has been very busy of late, but hopefully he enjoys regular racing, and can reproduce his recent form.
