Starsoftheclock Saturday 21st September 2024 Selections And Review

Yesterday’s Review

0.5pt e/way Trilby (97) – A race where the prominent racers held a decent advantage over those held up. The first four home were in the first seven places after three furlongs. A race not run to suit the selection at all who failed by half a length to make the first six home.

0.75pt e/way Top Of the Class (95) – David Probert’s mount failed to quicken in the home straight. The vet reported that the selection bled from the nose. A performance to put a line through.

0.5pt e/way Havana Sky (101) – A fine piece of race riding from jockey Jamie Spencer who saw there was little pace on, and decided to make the running from his wide draw. The winner Liosa (108) recorded the best speed figure on the entire card, and a career best as well. He can expect a big rise in the weights, but will still look well-handicapped even after assessing. There should be a little Class 6 race in the selection going forward.

Today’s Advice

Admiral D (6f Hcap) – This five-year-old is rated just one pound below the handicap mark he raced off when third in this race last year. He has shown a real liking for this venue over the years having finished seventh beaten just over two lengths behind Summerghand in the 2022 Ayr Gold Cup. His chance for today’s (2.25) Ayr may not look so strong if taking his last piece of form literally when finishing only eleventh at York from stall thirteen last month. However, on that occasion those drawn low held a massive advantage with the first seven home all drawn lower than stall eight. Billy Garritty takes the ride again having already won on the horse last year at Kempton from a pound higher mark. With pace from Paws For Thought and Bergerac drawn low, it is hoped that he can get a nice tow into the race from that side before coming home strongly.

Maw Lam (6f Gp3) – It may pay to forgive this two-year-old’s last run at Doncaster having got upset in the stalls last week behind Aesterius. A truer indication of her ability would be her staying on third in a Listed race at Deauville behind La Samana in a very good time. She has shown decent form since finishing third behind Leovanni in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, and looks a bit overpriced if she can put her best foot forward for today’s (3.00) Ayr. The extra furlong looks well within her compass, and her dam Bobbi Grace was a six furlong winner at Navan in 2014.

Tinto (6f Hcp) – Michael Dods’ eight-year-old has performed consistently since been acquired from the Amanda Perrett yard in 2022, and has also shown a liking for this venue when just failing by a half a length to take last year’s Silver Cup from Wobwobwob off a four pound lower mark. He has the benefit of seven pound claimer Rhys Elliott for today’s (3.35) Ayr Gold Cup, and he looks a shade overpriced considering Summerghand took this race as an eight-year-old in 2022. He showed his recent well-being at Thirsk when recording a (112) speed figure whilst carrying the welter burden of nine stone eleven pounds. The application of cheekpieces appears to have brought a new lease of life to the horse, and he should give a decent account of himself with just eight stone five pounds on his back today.
