Starsoftheclock Saturday 26th October 2024 Selections And Review

Yesterday’s Review

0.5pt e/way Calibos (83) – The selection failed to build on his Redcar effort on this first try on the all-weather trailing home last beaten thirteen lengths. A three-wide trip didn’t help his cause, and jockey Ryan Sexton reported that the colt hung left.

0.5pt e/way Distillate (97) – A solid effort from the selection who managed to hit the frame despite being short of room, as she can be as a hold-up performer. The winner Marble Angel (101) bounced back to form, and will look ahead of the handicapper even after re-assessment. Result 3rd 18/1, 16/1 adv…16/1 SP.

0.5pt e/way Star Of Lady M (112) – A decent enough performance from the selection on her first visit to this track just weakening out of it in the home straight. The 66/1 winner Ostraka (116) would have been very difficult to find, but perhaps I should have given Powerful Nation (115) another go considering he hit the frame again.

Today’s Advice

Pilgrim (5f 3y Hcap) – This horse first caught my eye when recording a huge (114) speed figure at Musselburgh back in June on Good To Soft going coming home five and a half lengths clear of the field. I had intended to put him up for selection at Royal Ascot, but I was a little worried about the Good to Firm ground for him. He still won nicely, but didn’t repeat his previous best. He was then given a two month break before an Autumn campaign during which he has landed on even faster going at York and Ayr where he has finished unplaced twice. He should appreciate the return to a softer surface for today’s (2.05) Doncaster but can only be a speculative choice to return to form. A reproduction of his Musselburgh form coud see him as a Group horse going forward, if connections can get him back on track.

Our Mighty Mo (7f Nursery) – The selection performed with credit for this coulmn last time out over the extended seven furlongs at York just weakening inside the final furlong behind impressive winner Fearless Freddy. The drop back to seven furlongs for today’s (3.50) Doncaster should see him in a better light, and he looks the right price to repeat his winning effort from Haydock when he showed great battling qualities in the finish. He has been busy since August, so there could be the case that he might need a break soon, but he still warrants an interest considering his seffectiveness under today’s conditions.
