Today’s Advice

Sylkie (8f 73y Hcap) – This three-year-old has been mightily impressive the last two visits to this track winning both nicely. She looked a non-stayer over twelve furlongs last time out, and the return to her favourite course and distance for today’s (1.00) Galway, should see her in a much better light. With conditions on the Heavy side, her one length win over Presence back in August on similar ground reads well. As a hold-up performer the likes of Vassula Ryden, Pandion Power, Thrifty of Digby and Out On Friday should ensure a truly run race. She looks worth an interest in a competitive contest at a double figure price.

Camachero (7f Mdn) – The short priced favourite Dollerina looks to hold all the aces at the weights for today’s (2.35) Galway being rated 92 by the handicapper. However, this is her first run in 187 days, and she was rated 100 at the start of this season. I am willing to take her on with the selection who looks like a step up in trip will be very much appreciated. He was noted staying on over six furlongs at the Curragh last month behind Just For One Day. The drop back in trip to the extended five furlongs didn’t suit him last time out, but he still recorded a decent (102) speed figure on the clock behind impressive winner Sweet Thing. He has form with cut in the ground, and at the current prices looks worth a speculative interest to continue his progress.

Pink Oxalis (7f Hcap) – Joseph Murphy’s three-year-old was disappointing last time out when selected by this column, but I was never happy with her from the start of that contest. She raced too keen early doors, and had to be taken off heels by jockey Gary Carroll, and never got into a rhythm. A high draw also looked to be an advantage that day, and she looked to be drawn on the wrong side of the track. Dylan Browne McMonagle takes the ride for today’s (3.10) Galway, and if he can get her to relax early on, and save energy for the finish she may be able to reproduce her staying on effort from Cork over six furlongs.

Alfalfa (11f 180y Hcap) – Wayne Hasset get’s the chance to make amends on the selection in today’s (3.45) Galway having not had a clear run last time out at the Curragh over a trip on the short side. He was noted staying on at the finish that day, and while this is a step up in class for trainer Timothy Doyle’s gelding, he looks nicely weighted with just eight stone two pounds on his back (taking Wayne’s five pound claim into account). A Thurles win on soft ground, and a second place finish at the Curragh over ten furlongs on Heavy ground last season show his ability to handle today’s conditions. There are plenty of dangers in the race, but I noticed that those at the front of the market might find this extended eleven furlongs on the sharp side.

Gustav Graves (5f Hcap) – This six-year-old sparked back to form last time out staying on over the minimum trip at Wolverhampton behind Bluebells Boy and races off the same mark for tonight’s (6.15) Newcastle. Last all-weather season he proved a revelation winning five races, and reaching a high of 78 on the handicap ratings. He likes to be held up, and front-runners Leodis Dream and Cotai Vision should give him something to aim at. A reproduction of his latest effort would make him look a bit overpriced in the market for tonight’s contest.
