Yesterday’s Review

1pt win Forever Young (121) – A race to enjoy rather than get heavily involved in with the selection having to overcome a wide draw in stall fourteen. The main danger in the betting Romantic Warrior (120) was having his first race on dirt, but had been working nicely on the surface. It looked a match between the two multiple Group 1 winners, and so it proved. When Forever Young’s jockey Ryusei Sakai was able to get across from his wide draw into the two path my first reaction was that the race was over. Romantic Warrior proved all the doubters wrong though. A five wide move on the home turn to leapfrog the leading pack probably cost him victory, as he cruised past to take up the running over two furlongs from home. However, this move proved to be a shade too premature as it played into the hands of Forever Young who had enough time to switch outside and turn a length and a half deficit into a half length victory at the line. Whatever way the horseracing enthusiast weighs up James McDonald’s early bid for glory, and he was quoted as saying he wanted to get out of the kickback, this was one of the great races of recent times. Connections of Romantic Warrior have indicated he will return to the Turf for the Dubai World Cup meeting, as the kickback will likely be even more extreme for the main race there. The winner had already proved himself one of the best (if not the best) dirt horses in the world with his performance in The Breeders Cup, and this performance enhanced that view greatly. It looks like the Dubai World Cup is at his mercy now as the general 5/4 favourite, with last year’s winner Laurel River next best in the betting at 5/1. Result 1st 5/2, 9/4 adv..11/8F SP.

0.5pt e/way Wilde And Dandy (101) – A solid return to form from the selection who raced keenly in rear before keeping on well into second place at the finish one and a half lengths behind the 7/4 favourite Drifts Away (103). His style of racing will always leave him vulnerable when the pace is not strong up front. Result 2nd 8/1, 15/2, 7/1 adv…13/2 SP.
