Yesterday’s Review
0.75pt e/way Everillo (90) – A sporting selection on the advertised Good to Soft going except the ground was nowhere near Good to Soft. It took until the fourth race for the Clerk of The Course to change the going to Good, but all the evidence from the opening race onwards was that the going was Good to Firm.
It was a similar situation to Ascot last week, and in fact the going allowance was almost identical at 11.6 lengths per mile faster than standard on the Grande Piste, and 11 lengths per mile faster than standard on the New Course. The course record went in the French 2000 Guineas courtesy of Henri Matisse, and as long as temperatures are near the 20 degree mark for long periods there will continue to be a great chance of the turf drying out too much for horses that want Good ground or slower.
The selection is one such horse, and he never travelled on the faster surface with Cristian Demuro almost pulling him up in the home straight. The same comments apply to morning favourite Tribal Chief who finished a place ahead in seventeenth.
Today’s Advice
ARAMIS GREY (6f 12y Hcap) – This eight-year-old mare performed with credit last time out when finishing a half length second behind surprise 200/1 winner Heavenly Heather in the Fillies and Mares All-Weather Championships at Newcastle. It looked on the day that those racing closest to the near side rail had an advantage, and as she made her challenge towards the middle of the track it may be wise to upgrade her performance slightly.
Trainer Jack Jones looks to have her in fine form since acquiring her from Rae Guest, and she looked very unlucky last August over course and distance when just failing by a half length to get the better of Elmonjed. On that occasion she was squeezed out at the start, and endured a torrid run through from the rear before flying home at the finish.
Callum Shepherd has the chance to make amends for that unlucky loss tonight, although her racing style does leave her needing plenty of luck in-running. With plenty of prominent racers in opposition tonight, she looks worth a sporting selection to get her head in front this time.
