Today’s Advice
MISS NIGHTFALL/SILVER GHOST/TUCO SALAMANCA (7f Hcap) – The (1.30) Goodwood looks a fascinating contest, and I wanted to be with three in this contest all at backable prices. Miss Nightfall has some strong two-year-old form from last season behind Camille Pissarro at Doncaster in the £300,000 Weatherby’s Scientic Stakes in September (who has gone on to finish placed in the French 2000 Guineas behind Henri Matisse) and finished one place ahead of French 1000 Guineas first past the post winner She’s Perfect over course and distance on her final start of the season. Two serious pieces of form.
Obviously, this is her first run in 241 days and she may need the run. I am surprised the handicapper has left her on a mark of 86, and she should be taking advantage of that sooner rather than later.
Silver Ghost won very nicely at Newmarket in a decent time over seven furlongs, and a reproduction of that effort should see her in the shake-up.
Tuco Salamanca finished nicely at Ascot over six furlongs last time out, and looked like the step up to today’s trip was just what the doctor ordered. He has managed to sneak in at the bottom of the weights for today’s contest, and he looks one to be on the right side of going forward now that he has shown he can be equally effective on turf as well as the all-weather.
ANGEL NUMBERS (5f Cns 2yo Fillies) – With plenty of wind around for some of today’s racing it may be worthwhile siding with some of the hold-up performers at the tracks where there might be a bit of a headwind. Beverley is one of those tracks today, and the (2.10) Hilary Needler contest has a few prominent racers that might set things up nicely for a more patiently ridden horse.
The selection won last time out at Chepstow over the minimum trip in impressive fashion at the finish. With a decent draw in stall one for today’s race, I am hoping experienced jockey PJ McDonald can track the likely decent pace from Ali Shuffle and Artista before finding the right gaps at the business end of the contest.
The daughter of Profitable looks an exciting type for trainer Dr Richard Newland, and she looks the right price for a sporting interest.
ELECTRIC STORM (6f Gp2) – A similar scenario could be in-play for today’s (3.30) Haydock Betfred Temple Stakes with a 14mph westerly headwind facing the contestants. The selection looks to have her work cut out for her to reverse form from France 13 days ago with Mgheera, but she was drawn widest of all that day over the minimum trip at Longchamp where a lower draw is usually an advantage.
A course and distance winner of the Listed Cecil Frail Stakes last May this James Tate trained mare has been performing with credit in Group 3 company since. Jockey Danny Tudhope is 2-2 on the daughter of Night Of Thunder, and she looks to have plenty in her favour today.
DANCING IN PARIS (14f Hcap) – This five-year-old was noted making a lovely seasonal debut at Newcastle last time out over the extended twelve furlongs behind impressive winner Sam Hakens. On that occasion jockey Dougie Costello made his challenge on the wrong part of the track down the home straight, but the son of Olympic Glory still managed a decent fourth place finish beaten just seven lengths.
Back over today’s course and distance, which he won over at Ascot last season, he looks to be still on a workable handicap mark for today’s (3.45) Goodwood. I expect him to reverse form with Steel Tiger who finished ahead of him last time out, and has still to show the same turf form of the selection.
GIBSIDE (16f 46y Hcap) – Chester Cup runner-up and favourite for today’s (4.40) Haydock Caballo De Mar has been improving in leaps and bounds since last Autumn for trainer George Scott. The market has him priced up at a shade of odds-against, and under today’s conditions I am happy to take him on with a bigger priced hold-up performer.
The selction fits that bill, and was more impressive on the clock over the same course and distance last time out at Chester under today’s jockey Duran Fentiman than the favourite. On that occasion he made good headway three furlongs from home before staying on to get the better off front-runner Surrey Belle inside the final furlong.
The favourite will be a more difficult horse to wear down, but a reproduction of his latest effort would make him a playable alternative for today’s contest.
PENNY MOUNTAIN (7f Hcap) – The (4.50) Curragh looks a competitive contest with plenty of prominent racers involved such as Verhoyen, Pinar Del Rio and Transcending Glory. The selection is a hold-up performer who has been recently acquired by trainer Tony Mullins from Andrew Kinirons, and judging by her latest effort over course and distance, a lowly mark of 68 should be very workable for her.
She was noted travelling nicely in rear on that occasion, and kept on well at the finish over an inadequate six furlongs behind Pickersgill in a maiden contest. She is still lightly raced with just three runs under her belt, and although this could be a tough ask on handicap debut, I can’t resist a small interest in her at the prices on offer.
