Today’s Advice
BRECKENBROUGH (7f Lst) – This filly came to my attention too late to get involved last season but it’s fair to say she has been a star for trainer Mario Baratti from day one. Formerly with UK trainer Andrew Balding she was a slow burner as a three-year-old who could only manage to finish runner-up twice from four starts. She looked nothing special on the clock, although her final start at Carlisle did yield a few future winners in May Blossom, Mostar Dreams and Mersea.
Nevertheless, she was installed 9/10 favourite for her French debut over 7f in a three-year-old maiden for fillies at Deauville and I awarded her a sensational (120) timefigure for her 4 length demolition of her ten rivals. Racing prominently, she took up the running at halfway before bounding clear in the home straight. The strength of that maiden has been highlighted a few times since by those in behind but the filly disposed of a much higher rated field next time out at Saint Cloud when taking the Prix Coronation Listed Stakes over a mile by three-quarters of a length from the Andre Fabre trained Anakova. Racing in touch of the leaders she made good headway in the home straight before taking up the running inside the final furlong and keeping on well to the line in the soft conditions.
It will be interesting to see how she fares in today’s (2.49) Longchamp Prix Maurice Zilber Listed race for Fillies and Mares as she will be third best in the betting behind the Francois Graffard trained Mandanaba and the Carlos and Yann Lerner trained Godspeed. The former has been placed in last year’s French 1000 Guineas but is on a bit of a recovery mission now having finished unplaced in her last two starts and the latter carries a 3lb penalty for her Group 2 Prix De Sandringham win. The selection will be one to follow for the season ahead and hopefully she can put in a solid performance today.
SUBIACO (5f Hcap) – This three-year-old returns to the scene of his two best career performances on the clock following a disappointing 15th of 16 on soft ground at Naas last time out. I am willing to give him another chance back on his favourite track for today’s (5.45) Dundalk in the hope that conditions were not to his liking last month. His course and distance handicap win from January has been franked twice by An Laochmor and while he was a shade below his best next time out behind Sporting Hero that one has won again since and the runner-up Arctic Steps has put in another solid shift behind Bye Bye Now from a 3lb higher mark. The price has contracted early this morning but he still looks worth a play.
GOT THE BOOTY (7f Hcap) – The (7.30) Southwell looks a race to get involved with as the favourite Ay Up Duck looks light on the clock so far from two course efforts with a (98) timefigure last time out his strongest so far. He should appreciate the step up to 7f tonight but I was happy to let him go at the short price on offer. Red Spells Danger’s (104) timefigure behind Jeddaal looks a bit more like it but he has yet to race on the tapeta from five starts and is also short in the betting this morning. The selection has an improving look to her form and recorded a career best (103) timefigure last time out when pushing Jumeirah Sands all the way to the line over 6f at tonight’s venue last time out. She raced close to the pace that day and battled all the way to the line after she was headed in the home straight. The step up in trip should suit as the dam Perle Rare was an 11f winner at Maisons-Laffitte and providing she can reproduce something like her seasonal debut two weeks later should shake up the front two tonight.
BOMB SQUAD (7f Hcap) – I try to avoid Class 6 racing as much as possible but I am more than willing to overlook that when it comes to the John Mackie trained star. The ten-times winning eight-year-old has been a diamond for connections over the years and punters always get value for money from the loveable grey. He has been excellent on the clock lately and his (106) timefigure behind Wrydcroft sixteen days ago is much the best of today’s field. He raced widest of all in stall thirteen that day under Billy Loughnane and kept on all the way to the line. The handicapper has left him alone for tonight’s (8.00) Southwell and the course and distance winner should appreciate the kinder draw tonight and Hollie Doyle who won on him last month is back on board. Prominent racers Enpassant and On Key should ensure a decent pace and he looks worth an interest at the prices on offer.
