Today’s Advice

Odin Owns You All (7f 14y Handicap) This Michael Bell trained 3-y-o colt returns to the same C/D at Southwell (1.50) where he won his maiden so impressively in February. On that occasion he travelled well before leading over a furlong out and going nicely clear to win by 2.25L to record a strong speed figure of (107). We didn’t see him again until 46 days later at Wolverhampton over the extended 7f when easily being put in his place by the Marco Botti trained Out Of Shadows. Looking at his laboured finish, I don’t feel we got the same horse that day. Perhaps he needed the run as it was over 6 weeks since he was back at the track. He might not be the same horse now that he was in February. At the prices today I am willing to see if he can spark back to life at his favourite track.

Ginny Jo (6f 16y Handicap) This 3-y-o filly trained by Derek Shaw had been running like a very lowly rated horse for the first ten races of her career. However, following a 75 day break she managed a nice second place finish behind Alainn Tu at Wolverhampton over the extended six furlongs. A career best speed figure (99) was achieved and that effort puts her at the top of my ratings for today’s contest. On that occasion she raced from the rear and tried to come up the inside rail in the home straight. She did meet trouble when making her challenge (which went unpublished in the race commentary) and was finishing nicely when getting a clear run. There are a few question marks of whether she can reproduce that at today’s venue but she is the right price today for finding out.

Cantora (12f 63y Handicap) George Boughey’s 3-y-o filly made light work of her rivals at Beverley recently over the extended 9f and steps up in trip today at Chester (4.55). This daughter of Time Test looks worth a try at the longer distance considering her dam Umthoulah won over today’s C/D in 2005. She gave notice with her speed figure of (103), when she won at Leicester on Heavy ground last year off a handicap mark of just (54), that she was grossly underrated. As with many of her trainer’s lowly rated horses, once they start winning it is very difficult to know where their ceiling is. Recent multiple winner Concorde being an example. She is worth a small interest today to see if she can make another step forward.
