Today’s Advice
1pt e/way Asgard’s Captain (7f 55y Hcap) Thomas Dowling’s gelding steps back up in distance for the (2.35) Roscommon following a surprising drop in trip lto at Sligo. The selection reared at the start that day, and all chance was gone on the tight track over such a short distance of 5f 182y. Hopefully he can exit the stalls more like he did in his previous run at Dundalk. That day he was poorly drawn in stall (9) and ran on well at the finish while looking like a step up in trip was badly needed. Despite all that he still managed a decent third place and recorded the best figure on the clock (99) at the weights for me. While he still has to show that he can reproduce that effort on Turf, he was noted making up a decent bit of ground from the rear at Sligo.
0.5pt e/way Mary Salome (7f 55y Hcap) Backers of Red Heel at double figure prices from last night will be hoping for an uncontested lead at Roscommon (3.05) today. With her price much shorter now, I am happy to let her win and will be watching her attitude in the finish. I was happy to look elsewhere for better value and landed on Andrew Kiniron’s likeable mare. The selection has yet to hit peak form this season following a fourth place finish beaten 6.5L at Gowran Park. With her handicap rating now back down to just 1lb above her last winning mark, and with Luke McAteer’s 3lb claim taken off, it looks a question of sooner rather than later for her next win. The likeable grey won twice last season at Bellewestown and Listowel and while one of them was on a Yielding surface, she may be even happier on today’s better ground.
1pt e/way Morning Approach (10f Hcap) Willie McCreery’s mare should have no problem stepping up from 8f to 10f in the (4.55) Fairyhouse. The likeable bay has already recorded a fine second place behind Burren Song over this trip last year and her pedigree looks to suit the longer distance. The handicapper has left her unchanged from her handicap mark of (66) following her fine fourth place finish at Leopardstown lto. Still 1lb below her last winning mark and with a decent draw secured in stall (9), everything looks in place again for another solid performance.
1pt win Glasses Up (14f Hcap) R Mike Smith’s gelding steps up to a more suitable distance for tonight’s (7.55) Carlisle and the handicapper has kindly dropped him a further 2lbs in the handicap. Advised in this column lto he had a three wide trip in a slowly run race over a distance too short. Considering the selection’s last winning effort was over 14f at Musselburgh almost two years ago from a handicap mark of (81) followers might be thinking he is past his best now. While there may be a case to be made for this, there are also signs on the clock that it may be a bit early just yet to write him off. At a double figure price tonight I am willing to find out.
1pt e/way The Muffin Man (6f 195y Hcap) Jessica Macey’s gelding takes his chance in tonight’s (8.30) Carlisle following a very decent fourth place finish at Wetherby lto. The speed figure (99) is easily the best of tonight’s field and that was achieved from a poor draw in stall (9). It was however his first sign of form and it remains to be seen if he can reproduce it at tonight’s more undulating venue. At the prices on offer he looks worth taking a chance with.
