Today’s Advice

TILSITT (7f 173y Hcap) The recent rain has made the (3.50) Carlisle Bell Handicap an interesting race to delve into. There are a few in here who may prefer a faster surface. R Mike Smith’s 6-y-o has form on a softer surface from Hamilton last year, and has been dropped 1lb by the handicapper following an admirable 1.5L third behind Garden Oasis at Ayr lto. Hopefully the excellent Ben Curtis can secure a decent position from a tricky draw in stall (13). He is 3lb below his last winning mark, and it shouldn’t be too long before he is back in the winner’s enclosure. In the same race I can’t resist a small interest in the Neil Mechie trained MOSSBAWN. The complete outsider of the field based on his last two efforts, but any sort of revival in form would see him overpriced on today’s softer conditions. The former David Barron inmate has some excellent past form on soft ground, notably when beaten 0.5L in third place behind Il Bandito at Redcar last year from a handicap mark of (84). Andrew Breslin’s 3lb claim is another bonus, and he could be a dangerous rival if he has been revitalised.

MOLINARI (11f 39y Hcap) Martin Todhunter’s 6-y-o showed signs that he is heading in the right direction lto at Hamilton when beaten just 2.5L behind Simple Star. If he can get anywhere near his form from last year when he was running excellent races from handicap marks between (74) and (84) he will be a huge danger to all today. His 3L second to Chillingham at Thirsk on a soft surface carrying 9st 13lbs reads very well in the context of this race. I am willing to take a chance at a double figure price that he can come forward another step today.

CIOTOG (8f Hcap) Mark Loughnane’s 5-y-o gelding may not appear to be in the best of form at the moment, and he may just be an all-weather specialist. The hold up performer likes a decent pace to aim at, and he might get that in tonight’s (8.10) Bath with prominent racers Hi Claire and War Chant in the field. I am willing to allow him his last run on a fast surface off a slowish pace which I feel didn’t suit him. With some rain around and his dam Cristal Fashion having won on Soft ground at Navan, it is possible that he may outrun his current odds.
