Yesterday’s Review
1pt win Storm Eric – It was nice to see owner and trainer Jamie Flynn saddle his first winner, with his only horse, last night at Dundalk. Cian MacRedmond’s 5lb claim was enough to see him prevail by a neck from Alfarida. I was worried when the positions fell into place that he might be a bit too far back, but thankfully the horse had enough in hand. The selection ran close to the speed figure I had in mind of (102) and it would be great to see him go in again for his small stable. Result 1st 8/1 advised…9\2 SP.
1pt win Bobby Joe Leg – The fastest race on the card and a very frustrating result. Everything went smoothly through the race with the selection taking the lead from the start. However, Connor Planas on Hit Mac from stall (9) decided he wanted a piece of the lead over four furlongs out. I was hoping James Sullivan would take a bit of a pull, and let Hit Mac go on as he is an inconsistent performer. Unfortunately, he hooked up in a bit of a head to head with the other front runner, and by the home straight they had pulled too far clear of the winner. The leaders had done too much early on, and Kath’s Toyboy prevailed by a head in the end.
Today’s Advice
Deed Pole (8F 3Y Handicap) this 3-y-o gelding ran a nice race to finish fourth at Bath recently and is back out eight days later at Yarmouth (1.30). With the going described as Soft today ability to handle conditions will be top of the list. The selection recorded a speed figure of (97) which is up there with the best of today’s competitors. Racing from a wide draw in stall (12) that day he was restrained to the rear and ran on well at the finish, despite not getting the clearest of runs. With a race fitness advantage over six of today’s nine competitors, and ability to act on a Soft surface, this son of Poet’s Word merits an interest at the prices today.
Spoof (5F 42Y Handicap) Another horse which has ran well recently run on a Soft surface when just failing by a head at Doncaster thirteen days ago. Despite not winning last year this 8-y-o gelding has dropped down the handicap ratings. He now gets to race off a handicap mark of (72) taking young apprentice Alec Voikhansky’s 7lb claim into consideration. Formerly with Charles Hills, he is now in the hands of Kevin Frost who is capable of revitalising other trainer’s horses. Kath’s Toyboy, Papa Don’t Preach, Siam Fox and Approach The City spring to mind. While there is the dreaded bounce factor to consider today. A small interest at the prices is taken in the hope that he can reproduce that Doncaster effort.
Sunset In Paris (8F 3Y) this lightly raced son of Camelot has been steadily improving on the clock since his debut at Goodwood for Richard Hughes in 2020. It was obvious that those pricing him up yesterday didn’t dig deep enough into his seven race career before writing him off as a 100/1 shot. There is some Soft ground form throughout his pedigree, through Cherokee Rose, and it would be unwise to judge him on his sole Turf run that day at Goodwood. Last time out at Chelmsford he ran a decent race, from a wide draw in stall (11), recording a speed figure of (99). He was forced to race wide the whole way round, while the winner, Thomas Equinas, raced on the rail, before staying on at the finish. The first time cheekpieces that day brought about a 4 length improvement on the clock and they are retained for today’s contest. While he obviously has no form on a Soft surface and may easily flop today, I am happy to have a minimum each way flyer on him at a Best Odds Guaranteed Price.
