Today’s Advice
Aljady (5F 164Y Handicap) A quick turnaround for Denis Hogan’s gelding at Navan (2.55) today, following a very strong performance behind Hurricane Ivor at the Curragh. A race which suited those held up, the 8-y-o gelding was one of the few, up with the pace, that managed to get within 3 lengths of the winner. The other pace setters (Master Matt, Downforce, Majestic Colt and Big Gossey) managed to finish 8th, 10th, 11th and 13th. The time was strong and a reproduction of that effort should see him go very close. The fact that it is an apprentice race (7lb claimer Kyle McHugh is 0-9) plus the quick turnaround of six days temper enthusiasm.
Kapono (6F Handicap) The last time we saw this 7-y-o gelding on Turf over a sprint distance he was winning by 4 1/4 lengths at Redcar on a Heavy surface. With the ground described as Soft today at Thirsk (4.15) and with Jonny Peate’s 5lb claim taken into account, he carries only 2lbs more in the handicap. He had been in middling form before springing back to life on the clock, last time at Newcastle, behind Jems Bond. A hold up performer, we will be hoping for a decent pace today from the likes of Cotai West, Parisiac and Society Lion for him to aim at.
Impressor (6F Handicap) Philip Makin’s 6-y-o gelding get’s the chance to go in again today at Thirsk (4.50) following a last gasp win at Redcar, on Soft ground, twelve days ago. His winning time that day is up at the top of today’s other Soft ground form on offer. It is worth noting that he performed very well following a nine day break at Hamilton last year behind Burtonlodge Beauty.
Cmon Kenny (10F Handicap) It has been 406 days sine we last saw this son of Dutch Art. A big, galloping type, Ian Williams’ grey looks to have loads more to give in the (4.55) at Newbury. Still lightly raced, he has only managed seven career efforts so far. He did win at Sandown in 2021 off a handicap mark of (69) and gets to race off just (73) today. A big, galloping type, Ian Williams‘ grey looks to have loads more to give. While his win has been on Good to Firm going, he also looks like he would appreciate a bit of cut in the ground. We will learn a lot more about him today.
Gunsight (11F 55Y Maiden) this 3-y-o made a nice seasonal debut at Bellewstown over the extended 7 furlongs recently, and it is hoped he can be seen in a better light, up in distance, at Limerick (5.00). Michael William O’Meara’s gelding recorded a decent time that day when finishing fourth. Danny Sheehy’s 3lb claim coupled with a nice draw in stall (4), should hold him in good stead today. The Joseph O’Brien unraced duo are obviously going to be of interest, but I am happy to have an each way interest on the son of Dawn Approach.
Riva’s Rob Roy (6F 210Y Handicap) Brighton form stays at Brighton as they say, and this 8-y-o gelding certainly has plenty of that going into today’s (5.45) contest. Unlucky not to get off the mark at this track last year, with three second place finishes, John Gallagher has found a nice race for him. The selection did well last time out at Newcastle, considering he was badly squeezed out at the start, and was only beaten 2 1/2 lengths at the finish. With a bit better luck at the start today Darragh Keenan’s mount can gain his third course win.
