Yesterday’s Review

1.5pts e/way Miss Down Under – Everything appeared to be going to plan with the selection out in the lead early on. However, I would have liked a little bit less pace pressure from Cieren Fallon on Arab Cinder. When Rob Hornby asked her to quicken she put a few of the field under pressure at the four furlong point. When asked to find again at the three furlong pole there was no response, and she was beaten 46 3/4 lengths. Rob reported to the stewards that she weakened quickly. As we know that she handled conditions very well at Sandown and Ffos Las last year, it is safe to say that all was not well with the filly. The winner Vallamorey recorded a speed figure of (105) and won very impressively. I had a (101) speed figure in mind for Miss Down Under, so a place was the best I feel she could have achieved.

Today’s Advice

Rainbow Fire (6F 212Y Handicap) Despite there being plenty of action today very few horses looked solid enough for my selection criteria. Marco Botti’s 5-y-o gelding was one that just about did in the (3.45) Haydock. A huge speed figure of (111) was recorded at Newbury last year, when beating Lyndon B, carrying the welter burden of 10 stone. With that in mind, it would appear that even with a handicap mark of (95) there should be another handicap within his compass this year. The son of Kodiac made a nice seasonal debut, when a 1 1/4 length second behind the prolific Kingdom Come at Kempton, just over three weeks ago. There is the worry of stall (9) today and hopefully Neil Callan can get him a nice position behind prominent racers Biggles and Gweedore. He is still lightly raced and has only had six career runs so far. It will be interesting to see if he can reproduce that Newbury effort today at Haydock.
