Yesterday’s Review
0.5pt e/way Shirzan (99) – The race developed as we thought beforehand with a slow pace up front which would have made things more difficult for the selection. She raced in rear and did very well to come home in 3rd place beaten 10 lengths. There should be a race for her on the Flat when there is more of a pace on up front. Result 3rd 7/1 adv…11/4 SP.
Today’s Advice
IN THE BLACK (5f Gp3) – The (1.15) Newmarket Cornwallis Stakes sees a rematch between four contestants that raced in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes over 5f at Doncaster last month. This was the fastest recent timefigure race of today’s contestants and it would be far to say that the selection looked the most unlucky of the participants. Racing in rear she made good headway over a furlong from home before being hit on the nose by a rival’s whip, and looked like she was finishing best of the entire field when squeezed out near the finish. Her jockey PJ McDonald had to restrain his mount sharply after the line as the combination clipped heels and almost became seperated.
It will be interesting to see if the selection can reproduce this effort at today’s different venue. However, this lightly raced daughter of Havana Grey looks like she is improving nicely since having a wind op after disappointing in 8th place behind Libertango in the Lowther Stakes at York over 6f. There again looks to be plenty of pace in today’s contest and with a bit better luck she should be involved in the finish.
REGENCY ROYAL (7f Class 2) – The (2.05) York British EBF £100,000 Final for colts and geldings looks a nice pot to pick up for the winner with 14 runners going to post this morning. There has been a move for the favourite Regency Royal overnight and his winning performance when recording a (105) timefigure in a maiden over 7f at Chester tops the charts for today’s race. He raced in touch on that occasion and always travelled like the best horse despite not getting a clear run two furlongs from home. When asked for his response he soon led a furlong out and was a comfortable winner by 2.5 lengths at the line. Callum Hutchinson was on board that day for the Andrew Balding stable and he retains the mount today. Any improvement from his third career start should see him difficult to beat.
His main danger looks to come from the Kevin and Lauren Frost trained Capitano Josepi who posted a (103) tiimefigure when getting up in the final strides to win his novice by a head over 7f at Yarmouth despite not getting a clear run through. The Charlie Fellows trained Ongombo steps up in trip having also won his maiden comfortably over 6f on a soft/heavy surface at Ffos Las last month.
SONIC SABIHA (7f Mdn) – This two-year-old filly caught the eye of the stewards at Listowel last month when tenderly handled by 10lb claimer Rebecca Parsons in 5th place behind the Joseph O’Brien trained Magna Victoria. Racing in rear the selection was forced to switch on more than one occasion as her path was blocked when trying to make headway in the final few furlongs of the mile contest. The stewards found connections in breach of Rule 212 (A)(ii)(failing to obtain timely, real and substantial efforts from the horse to achieve the best possible placing). The filly was banned from competing for 60 days, her jockey suspended for 14 racedays and ordered to forfeit her riding fee while trainer David Marnane was also fined e3,000.
The selection is still able to race while an appeal is ongoing and with professional jockey Luke McAteer onboard for today’s (4.50) Dundalk it is hoped that with stronger handling she should put her experience to good use in tonight’s maiden. The Noel Meade trained favourite Star Glory looked the one to beat based on recent efforts but has been declared a non-runner.
SEND HARRY (7f Hcap) – The selection returns to his favourite course and distance having not handled a yielding surface last time out at Down Royal when managing only 8th place over 7f behind Minaun View. The handicapper has put him up 7lb for his solid runner-up finish behind Mickey The Steel over course and distance last month and that will make things more difficult for tonight’s (6.30) Dundalk. He is also facing a few rivals such as the favourite Mehman who have been dropping down the weights recently and have been hinting at a return to form. At the current prices he still looks worth a small interest and deserves to win one of these contests sooner rather than later.
