Saturday’s Review
0.75pt e/way Redorange (108) – The selection managed to get his head stuck on the starting stalls when the gates opened and blew the start. He recorded the fastest third and fourth furlongs of the entire field but the damage was done early doors. He finished in 6th place beaten 3.25 lengths and will be well worth another chance going forward.
2pts win Arapaho Gold (109) – Disappointing to see this likeable juvenile lose his unbeaten record. The leaders were going 40-41mph for the early part of the race and despite obtaining a better position than the winner jockey Connor Beasley was determined to pull the head off the selection and restrain him to a worst position after the opening furlong. He recorded the fastest final furlong of the entire field but failed by a half length to reel in the more forward ridden winner. A bit of pilot error on this occasion for me….
1pt e/way Cherry Cobbler (98) – A slowly run contest which wouldn’t have suited the selection who raced in touch of the leaders. He was well backed in from 7/1 to 4/1 co-favourite, but looked like he hit a ridge on the track as he was coming to mount his challenge and couldn’t quicken thereafter. He finished in 6th place beaten 2.5 lengths, and is not one to give up on…
0.75pt e/way Fine Interview (108) – The 8.5mm of rain may have suited the selection more than plenty of his rivals as the going was changed to Heavy. He raced in touch of the leaders on the near side but couldn’t master the more prominently ridden Flash Harry (109) eventually coming home in 4th place beaten 4 lengths by the winner Pellitory (113) on the far side. A decent performance. Result 4th 9/1 adv…9/1 SP.
1pt e/way Jannas Journey (100) – The rain that fell would not have suited this one’s chances who had no form on a Heavy surface. She raced in rear and weakened over a furlong from home finishing in 6th place beaten 10.5 lengths. I was surprised connections allowed her to take part in those conditions…
Today’s Advice
CANON LAW (12f Hcap) – The selection has looked an improving type lately with a bit of cut in the ground. He attempted to make all at Galway last time out and was just nailed on the line by Coulstys Way with a long looking 10 lengths back to the third. It was a career best (105) timefigure and the handicapper has had to put him up 8lb for this performance. With very little pace in today’s (3.30) Listowel and with conditions described as Yielding (Yielding to Soft) in places he might be able to go one place better from the front.
The booking of 7lb apprentice Reese Holohan looks a smart move considering he has looked one of the finds of the season, and although he has hit the crossbar a few times since his excellent win at Leopardstown aboard Krasimir he could be a tough nut to crack from the front today.
RAPPELL (7f Hcap) – This course specialist returned from a five week break on the beach at Laytown and put in a solid display behind Initial Blue keeping on to take the bronze medal 2 lengths back. Jockey Joey Sheridan was aboard last time he was seen over today’s course and distance when just failing by a short head to get the better of the Johnny Murtagh trained Contrary To Law, and the combination went one place better at Limerick in a hot timefigure race.
He disappointed at Naas next time out but should appreciate the return to today’s more suitable venue and considering he is currently rated 17lb lower than his previous high handicap mark he should be involved in the shake-up for today’s (4.57) Fairyhouse. Stall one may not be the ideal slot for connections for a horse that races in touch of the leaders, so he will need a bit of luck in running.
LOUIESCALL (14f 55y Hcap) – The (5.12) Listowel looks to revolve around favourite Lauderdale King who showed a nice turn of foot at Cork recently to win over 12f. The handicapper has raised him 6lb for that 2.25 length victory, and while he had to use up a bit of petrol early on in that contest from a wide draw, I am not convinced that the step up to today’s trip is the way to go. With that in mind I am siding with the selection who finished 3 lengths in behind but as a former 15f winner should appreciate the step up in distance today.
He looked impressive on that occasion when taking the Tote Fegentri QR handicap by 3 lengths from Party Dress and while he made the running on that occasion he showed last time out that he can race prominently and put in a decent shift as well. Astelia and Cooley’s Mist looked to be the main front runners, and I am hoping 7lb apprentice Adam Brown Souza can slot in behind those two from stall 10.
HUGO’S GIRL (7f Hcap) – Mai Dahlia looked an improving type when last seen taking her maiden by 5 lengths over the mile at Naas from Donna Time. She hasn’t been seen in 79 days and it remains to be seen if the drop back to today’s distance will suit. One who should have no problem with the 7f trip is the Thomas Dowling trained four-year-old filly who took her maiden nicely 11 days ago on the beach at Laytown. She raced in touch of the leaders and was comfortably on top in the final half furlong when recording a decent (107) timefigure. The handicapper has put her up 5lb for her latest win but she has finished in fourth place on both occasions she has raced at today’s venue, and with up and coming apprentice Rory Mulligan on board once again the combination look a little forgotten in the betting with quite a few boxes ticked for today’s (5.27) Fairyhouse.
