DISTILLATION (7f 36y Hcap) – This Mark Usher trained three-year-old took five races to break his maiden tag back in July over course and distance. He made all the running on that occasion, and I awarded him a (100) timefigure which would be close to par for a class 6 contest. However, following a 38 day break he has taken his form on the clock to a new level with a win and two runner-up finishes in three races. His break-out performance on the clock came on the 21st September when taking a similar race by 7.5 lengths while making all the running from the Richard & Peter Fahey trained Ndoto. The handicapper raised him 12lb for that performance which yielded a career best (108) timefigure. Connections ran him again just 8 days later – and while he found only one too good in Dark Mandate – a (107) timefigure (while carrying 9lb more) indicated that his runaway victory was no fluke.
The handicapper has added another 3lb, and he steps up to a class 4 contest, for today’s (5.00) Wolverhampton. However, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of pace on in this contest, and if regular pilot Rose Dawes (whose 3lb allowance will come in handy), can get her own way in front, he may be able to record his third career victory. With my class 4 par set at a timefigure of (105) the son of Charm Spirit still looks to be ahead of the handicapper.
