Yesterday’s Review

1pt e/way Feathertop (86) – As predicted it was worthwhile opposing the front two in the market Hans Andersen and Helvic Dream. The selection, gambled on from 10/1 into 11/2, failed to reproduce her impressive Gowran Park effort, and weakened quickly when put under pressure. Too bad to be true…

Today’s Advice

Equion (8f 142y Hcap) – This C&D winner has been quietly returning to form following a 54 day break in September, and has been rated as high as (77) back in 2022 by the handicapper. Everything looks in place for a solid effort in today’s (4.25) Wolverhampton for the 5yo who is drawn well in stall (4) for today’s contest. A decent speed figure of (103) was recorded lto at Nottingham under the welter burden of 10st over the extended mile when keeping on at the finish behind Marsh Benham (who has since placed third at Newmarket last Friday). A reproduction of his C&D win from June when beating Hooflepuff by 1 1/2 lengths would see him competitive in today’s field. Green Power looks a lively danger for the John Gallagher stable, but at double the price it may pay to give Tony Carroll’s inmate (who had a double at Lingfield yesterday) a chance.

Way Of Life (12f 51y Hcap) – This Johnny Portman trained gelding recorded a career best (106) on the clock over C&D lto behind a well handicapped Fulfilled (previously highlighted in this column) last month. A reproduction of that effort would see him very competitive for tonight’s (7.30) Wolverhampton. On that occasion the 5yo gelding made headway from 2 furlongs out and ran on to lead inside the final furlong, before being collared near the line. Trevor Whelan who rode a 25/1 winner at Newmarket last Friday, takes the ride and a decent draw in stall (5) has been secured. Dangers include Miss Bluebelle and Further Measure in what looks a tight race judging by the market.

Fast Affair (9f 104y Hcap) – This 3yo filly recorded a career best (104) speed figure over C&D lto when finishing a head in front of Island Native. Due to the winning margin, the handicapper has only raised her 3lbs for tonight’s (8.00) Wolverhampton. On that occasion she showed a bright turn of foot off at the business end, and her trainer James Fanshawe is well adept at running up a sequence of victories with his charges when they hit form.

Sir Titan and Brave Display (7f 36y Hcap) – Sir Titan posted an excellent effort last month when finishing runner-up behind recent improver The Caltonian over C&D lto. Tony Carroll’s inmate has dropped to a winning mark of (57) now for tonight’s (8.30) Wolverhampton, and was recording competitive speed figures when last seen on the sand at Kempton in April. The front runner has been nicely drawn in stall (2), and it shouldn’t be too long before he returns to the winner’s enclosure. One that appears to be overpriced in the market, and may benefit from a speed duel up front should Vortigan pester Sir Titan is the Deborah Faulkner trained Brave Display. This 9yo caught the eye over C&D lto following a 203 day break staying on from the rear, and may prove a sporting project going forward at a lowly level. Despite being rated a lowly (46) by the handicapper when trained by Phil McEntee in the winter of 2022, he managed to record two wins (one over C&D) going forward. The most noticeable aspect of his profile, however, was the consistency of his speed figures. Archie Young takes a valuable 7lbs off, and it will be interesting to see if his new trainer can achieve that consistency again.
