Today’s Advice
DREAM ON KENT (7f 1y Seller) – The (2.47) Chester looks an interesting contest for two-year-olds over 7f and the selection is the one that has achieved most on the clock so far. An eighth place finish beaten 7.75 lengths behind Royal Ascot bound Virtuous Star may not appear much at first glance but the son of Massaat recorded a (92) timefigure on the day having kept on from the rear. The step up to 7f looks worth exploring as the dam Golden Amber has bred a 7.5f Tipperary winner already in Amber Blossom. PJ McDonald takes the ride for trainer David Evans and the jockey has been in red hot form lately with 7 wins from his last 21 rides.
MAN OF VISION/ADVERTISED (6f Hcp) – Twenty two runners go to post for the (3.35) York at the time of writing, and the two selections have achieved most on the clock so far of the field. The former finished runner-up behind Ten Carat Harry over 6f at Newmarket last month when just failing by a neck under William Buick. He raced in touch of the leaders and kept on all the way to the line having made headway over a furlong from home. The (110) timefigure rates near the top of today’s contestants and the handicapper has only raised him 3lb for that performance. The draw in stall 20 might be difficult to overcome judging by recent results but he still warrants a small interest.
The latter selection has performed best of the entire field on the clock when finishing runner-up behind Sovereign Spell over 6f at Newmarket back in April. I awarded him a (112) timefigure on the day and that race has yielded recent winners Albaydaa and Song Of The Clyde already. He raced prominently on that occasion and became a bit unbalanced in the dip before giving best to the winner. He failed to repeat that effort next time out over course and distance 16 days later, but I am willing to allow for that as there is a good chance the race came too soon. A return to a flatter track should suit the son of Advertise better, and judging by yesterday’s results at York a low draw in stall 3 could prove advantageous.
VINTAGE CLARETS (5f 15y Hcap) – As I have mentioned in the past predicting how a racecourse will ride judging by how it walks is a problem that has been in this sport since it began. The system we have at the moment needs to be seriously upgraded as can be seen from yesterday’s results at Chester. With the going advertised as Good to Soft it was clear early on from the winning times that the conditions were riding Soft with no good ground anywhere to be seen. The Clerk Of The Course quickly changed the advertised going to Soft, but how many punters that had backed horses wanting ground with just a little bit of cut in it had no chance with their selections before they even came out of the stalls??
The ground has been advertised as Good to Soft (Soft in places) with a dry day ahead today. If it is still riding on the slow side that will play into the hands of the selection who looks to have everything in his favour for the (4.00) Chester. He returned to form last time out in the Epsom Dash over 5f when coming through from the rear to finish in second place beaten just under a length behind Arklow Lad. This was is his first sign that he is ready to return to the winner’s enclosure since finishing runner-up last season at Southwell in September behind Azure Angel and he’s currently 10lb below that handicap mark. A winner of this race in 2023 he looks to have plenty of boxes ticked for today’s contest.
