Yesterday’s Review
1pt e/way Send Harry (101) – The selection was fancied to perform a lot better than last time out at Galway and was backed from 12/1 into 7/1. However, the response when asked to find another gear a furlong out was tame to say the least. He weakened into fifth place and he looks a difficult one to get the best out of.
0.5pt e/way Ochtar Againn (88) – The selection was backed from 11/1 into 5/1 but never looked dangerous throughout the entire race. She raced keenly in midfield and came home in 7th place beaten 12.5 lengths. One to avoid.
1pt e/way Vervain (77) – The selection looked to be in a decent position throughout but her jockey decided to ease up off the pace mid-race which proved an expensive error. She came home very well to go down by a diminishing head but was given too much to do. Pilot error. Result 2nd 7/2 adv…11/4 SP.
Today’s Advice
ALL WAYS GLAMOROUS (5F Hcap) – The (1.35) Ascot opens Shergar Cup Day at the track and this course and distance winner looks to have a solid chance to go back to back at today’s venue. He made all the running two weeks ago when getting the better of Getreadytorumble by a half length and the handicapper has only put him up 5lb for that victory. There doesn’t look to be loads of pace on in today’s contest with Gold Star Hero, who disappointed in the Stewards Cup at Goodwood last week, looking like the other front-runner. He is drawn in stall 1 today with the selection drawn in stall 11. I’m wondering if the selection will be racing on a different part of the track to the other front-runner? Either way the Chris Mason trained runner looks to be in fine form and has shown a liking for this track in the past. Marie Velon has yet to ride a winner at Ascot but has placed on a few occasions so far. This looks to be a decent chance for her to open her account at today’s venue.
PIERRE GROSSE (12f Hcap) – This three-year-old looks a well handiicapped horse for today’s (3.55) Ascot. His timefigures looked noting special early on in his career but he has started to come good in his two latest races. Stepping up to 12f at Down Royal he found only the Noel Meade trained Madbadanddangerous too good in the Ulster Derby and that form has been franked since by the winner at Galway. Last time out at The Curragh over 12f he went down fighting by just a half length to the Jack Foley trained Tokyo Tower. His (107) timefigure was a career best and he looks to have found a bit of consistency in his two latest starts. Trainer Jessica Harrington has a 50% strike rate at The Shergar Cup with 3 winners from 6 including Jungle Cove (2022), The Very Man (2023) and Going Remote (2024). Hong Kong based Luke Ferraris takes the ride and with a bit of pace on up front the selection should be able to slot in nicely from stall 9. First-time cheekpieces have been applied and the selection looks to represent a bit more value than the short priced favourite Hoseki who has been bumped up 10lb since winning his last two races.
