Sunday’s Advice
COVER UP (5f Gp1) – The (3.25) Curragh looks an interesting contest given that the favourite Comanche Brave returns from a 64 day summer break and connections probably have their eye more towards the Breeder’s Cup this Autumn. The selection looks massively underestimated given that he is already a Group 2 course and distance winner. Time For Sandals had no luck in running in the Nunthorpe last time out, but it should also be noted that William Buick’s mount was drawn on the wrong side and had very little luck in running as well when trying to make headway over a furlong from home.
As it is with hold-up sprinters this can be a feature of their performances and the selection will need luck in running once again. However, I didn’t expect him to be such a large double figure price for this contest and he looks well worth an interest.
DR RASCAL/FOLSOM BLUES (7f Group 1) – The (4.00) Curragh Group 1 National Stakes for two-year-olds looks a race worth getting involved in considering short price favourite Monogram only has one run on the board. He did look a promising type given how he travelled in the contest and he did well to get up near the line having been given a lot to do. But he takes on some talented juveniles with plenty more experience under their belt, and I would have no interest in him on his second day at school….
The former selection is unbeaten and showed a lovely attitude when not getting the clearest of runs in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes over 7f at Goodwood last time out. He quickened away from Haffner readily on that occasion, and I will be surprised if that rival is good enough to reverse the form.
The latter selection looked to be given a lot to do at Leopardstown over 7f in the Tyros Stakes behind Florida Bay. He raced in rear on that occasion from his wide draw and ran every furlong faster than the winner for the final five furlongs. With a bit more of a prominent ride he should be able to show himself in a better light at today’s venue and he looks a bit overpriced in the market given that the step back in trip would have been against him last time out.
Giant Sequoia is the interesting one given that he was able to hunt down Florida Bay the last day over course and distance in the Futurity Stakes. He looks very talented, but my one gripe with him is how he finishes out his races. When I compare his finishing style with the former selection’s it’s like chalk and cheese. Perhaps his talent will see him through, but at some stage he is going to have to get involved in a ding dong battle and he could be found wanting.
