Today’s Advice
COPACABANA SANDS (7f Lstd) – This likeable three-year-old filly was a non-runner recently at The Curragh on account of the going. The ground was advertised as Good on the day, and the times were on the slow side of standard. The advertised going for today’s (2.32) Naas is for faster ground with Good (Good To Firm) in places. It should be well watered as Clerk Of the Course Brendan Sheridan usually provides excellent racing ground.
If this filly has no problem with the ground she should go close in today’s contest judging by her two most recent efforts. She is usually held up for a run, and she had no luck last time out in a strong race on the clock when short of room on many occasions. Jockey Jamie Powell is back on board today, and we will be hoping he can make amends this time.
The pace should come from The Liffey and Mataariki, and we have a few prominent racers also involved which should ensure a decent pace. The price has come in a bit recently, so it will be a small win interest for me.
LADY IMAN (5f 205y Group 3) – This two-year-old daughter of Starman has been very impressive so far having won both her career starts. First time out at Dundalk over five furlongs she travelled smoothly and only needed to be shaken up to put three and a half lengths on recent winner Stop The Nation at the line.
Last time out in a very slowly run race at The Curragh, over the minimum trip, she again travelled strongly and her final two furlongs of 21.77 seconds were scintillatingly impressive under hands and heels riding. She has yet to race over six furlongs, but the signs are she should have no problem with the extra 205 yards for today’s (4.03) Naas.
Short priced favourite for today’s contest, Simply Astounding, looks the obvious danger following her course and distance win over Cape Sounion last month. The bare bones of that performance are not as impressive as the selection’s. However, as we know from last year’s winner Fairy Godmother, the stable’s runners can come on in leaps and bounds for their second career effort.
As thing’s stand, I will be having a small win interest on the impressive Ger Lyons trained filly.
CARLA RIDGE (5f 205y Group 3) – Eddie and Patrick Harty look to have an improving filly in this three-year-old daughter of New Bay. She finished one place ahead of Copacabana Sands last time out at Leopardstown, and was also denied the clearest of runs through on the day. The drop back to today’s distance should suit her, and as a course and distance winner last season, she has plenty of boxes ticked.
David Egan has been booked for the ride, and she looks to save her best for when she is fresh judging by her form so far. There are plenty of dangers in the shape of Whistlejacket and Babouche who finished first and second in last year’s Phoenix Stakes, so today’s (4.33) Naas will be a stiff test for her.
SIXTYGEESBABY (6f Hcap) – This Tom Clover trained three-year-old attempts to land the hat-trick in today’s (5.45) Newmarket, and it looks like the handicapper has been quite kind to him with an opening handicap mark of just 86. Already, a course and distance winner, the son of Starspangledbanner won nicely first time out last month over six furlongs at Doncaster from Fondo Blanco when carrying a decent weight of 9st 11lbs.
The trainer has booked seven pound apprentice Jack Callan (son of Neil Callan) for the ride, and he has been finding plenty of winners for George Boughey, Robert Eddery and George Baker this year with four wins coming aboard the well-handicapped It’s Tim. He also ticks plenty of boxes for today’s contest.
