Yesterday’s Review
1pt e/way Puturhandstogether (104) – The selection had no problem with the deteriorating ground, and was given an excellent ride by Dylan Brown McMonagle. With just Gibbs Island looking the likely leader, Dylan made sure he was positioned in his slipststream, as opposed to how the horse was ridden last time out. This made the difference, and was a great lesson for any jockey studying form, pace and positioning that you can position your mount closer to the pace than your horse would normally race. There was a gamble on the horse from 5/1 into 5/2 favourite, and it’s always nice when these gambles come off and you are on at the bigger price. Result 1st 5/1 adv…5/2F SP.
0.75pt e/way Woodstock (93) – A disappointing performance from the selection who met trouble in running over two furlongs out, but found very little when eventually in the clear.
1pt win Kodebreaker (99) – A nice piece of placing from trainer Michael Herrington who found a weak race for the selection. Jockey Lewis Edmunds rode an excellent race from the rear, just finding enough to get up near the line. Result 1st 10/3, 3/1 adv….4/1 SP.
Today’s Advice
Garifullina (5F 217y Hcap) – This lowly rated four-year-old filly caught the eye when winning over six furlongs at Thirsk on ground described as Good To Soft (Good in places). The winning times on the straight course were six lengths per mile faster than standard that day, so today’s forecast Good going for the (4.27) Redcar should hold no fears for her. She travelled nicely in touch with the leaders that day, and was denied a clear run on a couple of occasions before leading inside the final furlong and looking a comfortable winner at the line. Her recorded speed figure of (102) reads well in the context of today’s opposition, and she has started her winning from the right end of the handicap off a mark of 49. The handicapper has raised her just three pounds, and it will be interesting to see if she can build on that today.
Rosso (12f Mdn) – A competitive enough looking maiden for the (4.55) Curragh and the Dermot Weld trained short priced favourite Sidiza has been well found by the market considering her form behind yesterday’s Irish Oaks sixth placed Hanalia last time out. The selection’s formline with the Aidan O’Brien trained second favourite Ephesus reads well in the context of today’s race. The winner that day Blackpool (111) recorded the best speed figure on the card over the extended twelve furlongs with Rosso (107) coming home in third place, having been held up in the rear, four lengths ahead of Ephesus (105). Limited formlines in maiden events can be quite tenuous going forward, but at the prices on offer there looks to be enough to warrant a sporting interest on Dylan Brown McMonagle’s mount.
Showmethewayhome (9f Hcap) – The (5.02) Redcar looks a contest with more questions than answers looking at the main contenders on the clock. The favourite Temper Trap has been disappointing of late, as connections reach for the first time tongue tie. Recent Bath winner Imprint (101) put up a career best performance when wearing a first time tongue tie. The David Thompson trained Where’s The Crumpet finally came good on Turf at Ayr over the mile from a handicap mark of 46 by a short head. The lightly-raced Ewan Whillans’ trained selection finished in fourth place that day beaten four lengths by the winner whilst having her seasonal debut following a two hundred and fourty three day break from the track. The unfancied 80/1 outsider could be forgiven for dropping out of contention having become outpaced over three furlongs out. However, she was noted making good headway in the home straight under jockey Rowan Scott. Indeed, she recorded the fastest second last furlong of 11.67secs as recorded by Course Track sectional timing. She now meets the winner on seven pound better terms, and while a reproduction of that effort is not guaranteed today, she looks the right price for a sporting interest.
