Yesterday’s Review
0.5pt e/way Miss Nightfall (103) – A solid seasonal return for the selection who didn’t get the clearest of runs in coming home in second place, but was well held by the winner. Result 2nd 7/1 adv…15/2 SP.
0.5pt e/way Silver Ghost (106) – Her Newmarket win was one of the strongest on the clock on offer, and she reproduced that performance once again. It was interesting that jockey Marco Ghiani wanted to go down the inside route twice during her run, but went outside and had a clear passage to victory. Sometimes it’s best to keep things simple….Result 1st 10/1 adv…11/1 SP.
0.5pt e/way Tuco Salamanca (101) – The selection didn’t handle the track when hanging left on the turn in. It was a fine effort to get himself back into the race, and fill the first three places for the advised selections. A nice £679.73 Tricast or £1,020.70 Trifecta for those that like to dabble on the exotic bets. Result 3rd 12/1 adv…15/2 SP.
0.75pt e/way Angel Numbers (77) – A case where the jockey PJ McDonald overcomplicated things and ruined the fillies chances of a nice pot. As I said in the write-up a headwind was in-play down the home straight, and the selection looked very impressive at Chepstow when tracking the leaders and pulling clear inside the final furlong. Quite why PJ McDonald wanted to take on the pace angle leader Artista from the start is a complete mystery. The two duelling leaders cancelled each other out and were both unplaced. A wasted opportunity. Wrong, wrong, wrong….
1pt e/way Electric Storm (109) – The selection performed better than last time out at Longchamp, but was put in her place again by the winner Mgheera (113) who repeated her last time out speed figure. I wasn’t the only one expecting her to “bounce” from her seasonal debut as she went off at a massive 10/1 in the betting. Unfortunately, the selection could only manage fourth place, and I wasn’t able to advise an extra place bet for all punters with just Paddy Power, Betfred and Unibet giving that bonus.
1pt e/way Dancing In Paris (91) – A very slowly run race which resulted in three horses coming clear of the field at the finish. Richard Kingscote’s mount was denied a clear run in the home straight, and was beaten a half length by the winner French Master (92) at the finish. The winner looks to be an improving type, and it was still a fine effort from the selection who should pick up a handicap before the season is out. Result 3rd 6/1 adv…9/2 SP.
0.75pt e/way Gibside (101) – It was disappointing to see the selection just weaken into third place near the line after having every chance to go by the winning 11/10 favourite Caballo De Mar (103). George Scott has done a fine job with the winner who keeps improving in the mould of previous stable winners such as Isle of Jura and Prydwen to mention just two.
0.5pt e/way Penny Mountain (86) – The slowest race on the card, and it generally paid to race prominently, although the winner came from a midfield position. The selection ran the worst race of her four race career coming home a well beaten ten lengths sixteenth of twenty runners. Not a good start for new trainer Tony Mullins…
Today’s Advice
ONE LOOK (8f Gp2) – Four-time Group 1 winner Porta Fortuna will be a tough favourite to get the better of in today’s (2.30) Curragh Lanwades Stud Group 2 contest over the mile. The selection might be worth a sporting interest in giving her something to think about at the prices on offer considering she is still quite lightly raced, and has already had a run this season.
On seasonal debut last month over course and distance the daughter of Gleneagles recorded a career best (113) speed figure on the clock when racing prominently under the welter burden of 9st 11lbs. A reproduction of that effort would see her go close today, and although the price has been cut overnight there is still enough there to warrant a small interest.
SWELTER (8f Gp1 3yo Fillies) – A similar scenario in the big race of the day the (3.40) Curragh Irish 1000 Guineas whereby the three-time Group 1 winning filly and short priced favourite Lake Victoria will be a difficult one to get the better of. Again, the selection sits at the top of the speed charts having recorded a (116) speed figure last time out at Leopardstown when getting the better of another of today’s rivals Cercene.
A different test for her today over the mile at today’s venue, and trainer Dermot Weld has been noted in the media as not wanting the ground to be too fast for her. The times yesterday on the straight course were very close to standard, and with 6mm of rain in the past 24 hours there should be no excuses.
0.5pt e/way One Look (7/2 William Hill, 10/3 General) 2.30 Curragh
0.5pt e/way Swelter (4/1 Ladbrokes/Corals/Betvictor) 3.40 Curragh
