Yesterday’s Review
0.5pt e/way Grant Wood (91) – The selection was a long way off the number I had in mind for him. He weakened tamely when asked for an effort over a furlong from home. The ground was well watered and the winning times were indicative of Good going so I wouldn’t use that as an excuse.
1pt e/way Palmar Bay (100) – It was right to take on the favourite Supido who was dropping back in trip and found things happening too quickly. The selection found nothing when asked for his effort over a furlong from home and he was a long way off his course and distance win from last season. It looked a disadvantage to race on the rail at Chester yesterday but this was still way below what was expected.
Today’s Advice
PEARLED MAJESTY/KOMOREBI (10.5f Gp1) – The (3.30) Chantilly revolves around the short priced favourite Constitution River who amazingly has been ruled out of the Epsom Derby for this less prestigious contest. To say he has been the most impressive Derby trial winner would be an understatement. He looked an absolute machine at Chester when recording a (117) timefigure and I always had it in my mind that he would dance all over Benvenuto Cellini for at least eleven of the first twelve furlongs at Epsom. It is a bit of justice for Epsom Derby ante-post backers that connections have drawn the car park for today’s contest, and while he may concede ground to all his rivals, and still power past them in the home straight, I can let him win at the prices on offer.
The former selection has drawn beautifully on the inside in stall 2 and he has already done us a big favour this season when powering home from the front over a similar trip in a Group 3 at Longchamp. We still don’t know how good he is and at a double figure price he looks worth a sporting interest.
The latter selection looked unlucky last time out in the French 2000 Guineas having drawn wide and having to race on ground that looked a shade slower than he would have preferred. He went past Hankelow (who had all the favours from the inside draw) like he was standing still, and if the rain stays away today and he can race closer to the pace, he looks much the better horse. The extra distance is the key question, and while there are signs that his dam provides decent stamina for her progeny, it is still a first step into the unknown.
