Today’s Advice

Farren Glory (16F Grade 1) – The only Grade 1 winner in today’s (1.40) Leopardstown, and he looked to be cruising before an unlucky fall two out at Aintree in another Grade 1 Novice Hurdle last time out. He looks to be a little overpriced in today’s market, providing the fall has had no ill effects on him. Jack Kennedy, who has been on board for his two most recent wins, takes over the ride from Sean Bowen. A strong display would see double figure prices for the Supreme Novice Hurdle disappear.

Mercurius Power (8F 5Y Hcap) – This six year-old bounced back to form over his preferred distance at today’s venue when just going down by a head to Armoured last month. The pair pulled well clear of the third, and the handicapper has been forced to put him up 3lbs for today’s (5.30) Newcastle. The (103) speed figure reads well in the context of today’s race, and a decent pace from Tio Mio, Reel Prospect and Thunder Max would help his chance.

Nelson Gay (5F Hcap) – A tightly knit handicap for tonight’s (6.00) Newcastle with the race Pepsi Cat won over C&D last month looking an interesting form line. On that occasion Moon Flight managed to finish ahead of both Dark Kestrel and Nelson Gay by less than a length. The selection is a pound better off at the weights with tonight’s favourite Moon Flight, but is more than three times the price in the market. The presence of front runner Night On Earth might work to the advantage of the two hold-up horses a bit more tonight, and a very slight preference is given to Nelson Gay due to Dark Kestrel’s recent effort coming up short.

Secret Daay (6F Hcap) – Eighteen race maidens wouldn’t always be the best prospects from a punting angle, but there have been signs lately that this David Thompson trained five-year-old should be able to open his account, sooner rather than later. The combination of blinkers and tonight’s venue have brought about a big step forward on the clock for the son of Adaay, and saving energy through the early part of tonight’s (7.30) Newcastle will be the key to his chances with prominent racers such as Another Angel and Blackcurrent in opposition. If jockey Phil Dennis can get the horse to relax early on, and save something for the finish, he may well break his maiden tag tonight.
