Yesterday’s Review

A combination of bad luck and bad calls yesterday.

0.5pt e/way Tradition (101) – Jockey Harry Bentley reported that his mount failed to pick up after having to be steadied to avoid Silver King at the 400 metre mark. A poor selection by myself here, even though it was a minimum stake selection, on a horse that needs absolutely everything to go right just to place. One to avoid.

1pt win New Power (98) – Everything looked to be in place for a big effort from the selection who was backed into 2.7 favourite, but found nothing when asked in the home straight. A well below par effort compared to his recent form.

1pt e/way Beauty Thunder (98) – The selection apperared to take a false step in-running, and looked like he was going to be pulled up at one stage. His rider regained his momentum, but was reported to have had difficulty obtaining a clear run at the 300 metre mark. A well below par effort from this one, unfortunately.

0.5pt e/way Norther Fireball (100) – I was asking too much from the selection here, and there was always a chance that he would use up too much energy early on with other front-runner Sky Cap in the field (they eventually finished last and second last). Bad call by me on this one…

Today’s Advice

ATA RANGI (8f Hcap) – This four-year-old won nicely last time out over course and distance on British debut for trainer Ed Walker having been acquired from the Henry De Bromhead stable. On that occasion he overcame a wide draw to race prominently in a slowly run race before taking up the running over a furlong from home and finishing out his race strongly.

The handicapper has only put him up four pounds to a mark of 80 for tonight’s (8.30) Kempton, and there should be more to come judging by his sectional times and the way he quickened up in the final two furlongs. A similar win from the past would have him not far off course and distance winner Amniarix who won a Class 4 handicap in December 2020 before finishing third in a Listed race from a mark of 98.

The favourite Arctic Dawn has been well found by the market, and steps up to tonight’s distance for the first time, while Superposition should appreciate a return to the all-weather having also won a slowly run race at Southwell back in March.
