Today’s Advice

Sir Maxi (6f Hcap) – Favourite Wee Fat Mac has put together two decent efforts lately over course and distance behind Muscika and Novak respectively, but looks quite short in the betting considering Bellagio Man finished ahead of him two runs back. Alex Jary’s mount blew his chances last time out at Southwell as he reared when the stalls opened, and was left with too much ground to make up. He may be able to get away with his usual slow start today considering there could be a bit of pace on up front with Nights Over Egypt, Howzak and Blackcurrent in opposition. The selection is also a hold-up performer who won last time out over course and distance, and should also appreciate a decent pace to aim at. He had dropped a stone in the handicap ratings since his last win in November 2023, and the three pound rise the handicapper has applied is offset by Irish apprentice Patrick McGettigan’s seven pound allowance. Patrick has ridden four winners in Ireland since the start of last year, and is an interesting booking for trainer Sam England. A reproduction of his latest effort should see him challenging for the win in today’s (2.21) Newcastle.

Arlington (5f Hcap) – This Bryan Smart trained four-year-old looks to reserve his best for today’s venue with three of his last four efforts yielding two wins and a second place finish. Last time out over the minimum trip he found only Lady Of The Garr too good (who runs earlier in the 1.11 Newcastle) having made most of the running following a 50 day break, and should strip fitter for today’s (4.06) Newcastle. He likes to be up with the pace, and may just have Birdie Bowers in opposition for the lead who is having his first run in 186 days. The selection could be an improving sprinting type in low grade races that his trainer has done well with in the past. His main danger could be the Linda Perratt trained Henery Hawk who was unplaced over course and distance last time out following a 76 day break, but has some solid back form in a higher grade than today’s contest.

Magna Gee Gee (11f 23y Hcap) – The (5.30) Southwell looks an interesting contest for three-year-olds with all of the field trying today’s distance for the first time. The selection interested me the most both on the clock, and from a stamina point of view. Last time out he recorded a career best when winning at Wolverhampton having stepped up to the extended nine furlongs trip. On that occasion he raced prominently and responded to a challenge near the finish having taken up the running two furlongs out. He has improved with each run on the clock so far, and it is interesting that his dam Hot Wired won over twelve furlongs. A few of today’s rivals look doubtful stayers at today’s distance on breeding, and the selection looks overpriced as the complete outsider of the field.
