Yesterday’s Review
1pt e/way Woodstock (100) – The selection looked to have exited the stalls awkwardly and at one stage it looked like Joanna Mason was going to do well to stay aboard. He never picked up in the home straight coming home in sixth place beaten 4 lengths and it is possible something went amiss at the start. Not his true form at all.
0.75pt e/way Cut A Dash (104) – Not a vintage renewal of this race as the first eight were covered by 2 lengths. The selection did well to squeeze through a tight gap to keep on into fourth place beaten just a length. Result 4th 9/1, 8/1 adv…12/1 SP.
0.5pt e/way Dividend (109) – A fine return to action for the selection who managed to find a way through the stacked up field in the home straight and kept on to secure third place beaten 2.25 lengths. It was a surprise to see him as the complete outsider of the field and at one stage of the day reached 50/1. The race was a boost for Ombudmsan with both the winner and the third finishing behind him in previous contests. Result 3rd 25/1 adv…33/1 SP.
Today’s Advice
BLUE BOLT (7f 213y Gp2 Fillies & Mares) – The (3.40) Royal Ascot Duke Of Cambridge Stakes looks another exciting renewal and the selection looks a lightly-raced improver from the in-form Andrew Balding stable. She ended last season with an excellent runner-up finish in the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes over a mile behind the Karl Burke trained star Fallen Angel. A 2.25 length defeat to that filly was no disgrace and she looks to have improved again judging by how she quickened away to win a Listed race by three quarters of a length on seasonal debut over the mile at Goodwood. The slow pace set by She’s Perfect wouldn’t have suited her but she still came from an unfavourable position in behind to put those rivals away very comfortably. The price is where it should be for today’s contest but she does look the most likely winner.
OMBUDSMAN (9f 212y Gp1) – This five-year-old is regarded as one of the best in the world at the moment and he has a decent chance of demonstrating that in today’s (4.20) Royal Ascot Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. It looks a match between himself and the French raider Daryz who disappointed when last seen on these shores at York last August. With the pace looking to come from the Ed Walker trained Almaqam the race should set up nicely for William Buick’s mount to come through late on and show that he can be considered a world superstar right now.
RULER’S CONTROL (6f Lst) – The (6.10) Royal Ascot Windsor Castle Stakes looks a race worth getting involved in considering plenty of the fancied runners are drawn low which would appear to be a disadvantage if the going stick readings and how the track has appeared to be riding on the first day are anything to go by. With high numbers looking to have an edge in the two straight course contests yesterday and the going stick reading of 8.9 on the stands side versus 8.5 on the far side, I have landed on the selection who looks very well drawn in stall 23. He won on debut for the Jack Foley stable over 5f on Heavy ground at The Curragh, having raced prominently, and after taking up the running over a furlong from home was hanging on at the finish to hold Force Noir by a head. He has since been sold to race for the Joseph O’Brien stable and hasn’t been seen since but the form of that race has been franked by the runner-up who bolted up by over 4 lengths next time out at Naas. There is a worry about the going drying out come the last race on the card, and we have yet to see how the selection will perform on a faster surface, so the stakes will be kept low. There are positive signs from the grand dam Etoile Montante who did win on firm ground in the USA back in 2004.
