UNDERWRITER (5F Hcap) – The 2026 York Ebor Festival has arrived with the ground advertised as Good at 6am this morning with 1.8mm of rain overnight. Temperatures are high between 18 and 19 degrees celcius with a forecast of light rain between 11am and 3pm. It looks like the ground should be fair for all contestants and will ride close to standard. The selection caught the eye last time out at Ascot on just his second star for new trainer Michael Keady. More known as a front runner for Archie Watson under the Wathnan banner he was held up for a run on this day and was denied a clear passage when coming through to challenge over a furlong from home. He an on well at the finish and looked like he could have gone very close to winning with a bit of luck in running. The handicapper has left him untouched for today’s (4.45) York, and with Luke Morris booked to ride at a lightweight from a low draw he now looks a well-handicapped horse considering he was rated 8lb higher when at his peak. There looks to be plenty of prominent racers around him with Schrodinger’s Cat (9), Baker Blue (11) and Manatee Mehmas (13) favouring that style of racing.
HAVANA SPRITE (6f Nursery) – The (5.20) York looks a weak nursery for a class 2 with the selection a clear top rated on the clock following a comfortable win in a similar race at Newmarket. The handicapper has only put her up 4lb for that cosy half length victory over the James Owen trained Acclamation Star and following two previous victories she still looks well treated from a mark in the low 90s. Favourite Henly On Thames made all the running last time out when winning a low grade contest at Hamilton and with plenty of prominent racers around her the selection she should have the race run to suit her hold up style under jockey Hector Crouch who has won on her before.
The big race of the day The Group 1 Juddmonte Stakes looks a race to savour but with the front two in the market Ombudsman and Constitution River priced as they should be it will be a watching race only for myself.
