Yesterday’s Review
1pt win Fort Vega – A nice battling performance from Robbie Colgan’s mount yesterday, who had a better trip than recently at Limerick. Going into the race, I was stuck between Saturn Seven and the selection. Even though Ken Condon’s filly recorded the bigger speed figure (101) versus (99) and was a bigger price, a couple of factors swayed me towards Sheila Lavery’s colt. Firstly over the years, I have found that “second day at school” can sometimes result in a down performance. And secondly having been (0-7) when selecting females last month, I decided I had better go with the boys this time. In the end there was only a neck between them, so luck was on our side. Interestingly, using the photo below (taken before the 3 furlong pole) and the winning speed figure of (96), we can see it was an advantage to be up with the pace. The first three at the finish are sitting in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The one to upgrade from the race may be Dermot Weld’s gelding Livio Milo (Moyglare Stud colours in 6th) who closed to within 1 length at the finish. Result 1st 4/1, 7/2 adv…

Today’s Advice
Nivelle’s Magic (8f Handicap) A step up to the mile and a return to Chelmsford (8.15) tonight for Simon Earle’s filly, who is rated just (46) by the handicapper. Last time out over 7f she stayed on well enough to record a decent speed figure (104) to suggest that there may be a little race in her. The dam Nihal did manage a win over 12f, so there is every chance that tonight’s distance could be within her compass. It’s just the question of whether she can repeat that performance? Thomas Equinas is the obvious danger, who has shown that he is well handicapped off just (52) with his recent performances on the clock. He was unlucky to bump into a Gary Moore special the last day and his course form stand him in good stead for the step up in trip tonight.
