Yesterday’s Review
1pt win All Dunn – Remarkably the selection drifted out to an SP of 15/2 which would have made him an each way bet on the day. The number I had in mind for Jamie Osborne’s gelding was (100) based on his last two performances. The winner Freetodream (102) improved 13L per/mile on the clock from his last run and the stewards were right to ask questions. It’s another incident where the racing weight of the competitors would be helpful to punters, as I’m sure the winner was a lot closer to his racing weight today than at Kempton. All Dunn (96) may be more suited to the All-Weather or a more conventional turf track.
1pt e/way Mudlahhim – I had expected the selection to make all the running but connections had a different plan in mind with Pop Favorite taking up that role. Perhaps they wanted to set the race up for the son of Tamayuz who has also raced prominently in the past. As it turns out he clung on for a place and as usual he appears to struggle a little under pressure at the business end of races while still going forward. Result 3rd 7/1, 13/2 adv …17/2 SP
1pt e/way Celtic Revival – Eddie Lynam’s gelding did what we hoped for at a decent price (finish in the first five). Unfortunately with a non-runner most firms only payed out on four places. As we know the selection is a hold up horse. At a track like Gowran Park, draw and position can be crucial and so it proved. In a slowly run race stall (15), (13) and (11) simply took up prominent positions from their draw and filled the first 3 places at the finish. Better use of the draw in stall (2) should have been managed. The son of Sea The Stars will be seen in a better light back at 12f.
Today’s Advice
Yaaser (8f Hcap) Jim Goldie’s 5-y-o gelding returns to a more suitable track in a less competitive race at Ayr (4.00). Back on a faster surface and still racing off a handicap mark of (73) this hold up performer just needs a bit of pace to aim at. With Ventura Rascal and Wadcre Grace in the field he should get that. Hopefully Paul Mulrennan can get a nice run through from what can be a tricky draw sometimes in stall (1). Bet365’s traders went 20/1 early doors and haven’t been keeping up with the horse and this column. Offers of 12/1 have also been quickly taken. The price has gone short now and the Best Odds Guaranteed option should be taken.
Two Tempting (8f Hcap) A chance is taken on Johnny Portman’s gelding back at his favourite venue in the (5.40) Kempton. Racing on ground that was probably too soft for him at Ascot lto, I am happy to put a line through that effort. Before that he ran a career best (106) on seasonal debut behind Sir Michael Stoute’s well handicapped Assessment over C/D. The son of New Bay likes to race prominently and providing he doesn’t use up too much energy early on with Jade Country, the race should be run to suit. If he does get involved with John Flint’s gelding too early that would set it up for the likes of Tahitian Prince from stall (9).
